The community of Ugboju in Agatu Local Government Area, Benue State, was targeted in a fresh attack, resulting in the loss of several lives.
While conflicting reports on casualties circulate, a source disclosed that nine people succumbed to the violence believed to be orchestrated by suspected herdsmen.
Former deputy chairman of Agatu Local Government, John Ikwulono, reported that armed herdsmen launched the assault on Ogboju community on Wednesday night, with the death toll reaching nine as confirmed by recovered corpses. The Benue State Government and police authorities are yet to officially confirm the attack.
The Agatu Local Government has been particularly hard-hit by recent attacks, with suspected terrorists claiming the lives of at least eight people in a prior incident. Residents in Ogwumogbo, Ikpele, and Ejima village were forced to flee their homes due to a Saturday attack.
Despite the escalating violence, the Benue Police Command, including Public Relations Officer Catherine Anene, remains silent on the matter. The region has witnessed a series of attacks, leading to significant casualties and displacements.
In a previous operational visit, Chief of Army Staff Taoreed Lagbaja praised the 401 Special Forces Brigade Makurdi for their sacrifices and urged them to maintain discipline and professionalism in ensuring peace and stability.
