The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has responded to a viral video showing a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) officer soliciting money from a passenger at the airport.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, condemned the behavior as completely unacceptable.
The video, which has been widely shared, shows an unidentified NIS officer persistently begging a tourist for money at the International Airport, even suggesting card payment. This incident has sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians viewing it as a symptom of deeper issues within the country’s values and a disgrace to the government.
Mrs. Kuku assured the public that the officer involved has been removed from his post and is currently facing disciplinary action from the NIS. “I have seen the disturbing video circulating of a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) official begging a passenger for money at the airport,” she stated.
“This behaviour is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the passenger experience we aim to provide at our terminals. The officer in question has been immediately withdrawn from duty and is now facing disciplinary action with the NIS.”
FAAN emphasised its commitment to maintaining integrity and professionalism among all airport personnel. Kuku urged passengers to report any similar incidents and seek immediate support through the provided contact numbers and QR codes.
“Your safety and comfort are our top priorities, and we will take every necessary step to ensure a pleasant travel experience for everyone,” Kuku added.
