Turkey Triumph in Euros Opener with Spectacular Goals from Müldür and Güler.
Turkey commenced their UEFA Euro 2024 campaign with a remarkable 3-1 victory over tournament newcomers Georgia, highlighted by stunning goals from Mert Müldür and Arda Güler. The match at Signal Iduna Park, home of Borussia Dortmund, was nearly called off due to torrential rain, but once conditions stabilised, the game provided a feast of football.
The first half saw Turkey take the lead in spectacular fashion. Müldür struck with a first-time volley from a headed clearance, sending the ball into the top corner of the net, beyond the reach of Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. This sensational goal set the tone for the match and left Georgia reeling.
Turkey seemed to double their lead soon after, with Kenan Yıldız scoring from close range. However, the goal was disallowed by VAR for a marginal offside, giving Georgia a lifeline. They capitalised on this opportunity when Georges Mikautadze, left unmarked in the box, equalised with an instinctive finish into the bottom corner, becoming the first Georgian to score at a major tournament.
The second half saw a dip in intensity but not in attacking intent. Turkey’s Hakan Çalhanoğlu forced a sharp save from Mamardashvili with a long-range free-kick, while Georgia’s Khvicha Kvaratskhelia came close with an effort that went wide.
The decisive moment came when Güler, showing his class, curled a stunning shot into the top corner, making it seven goals in his last seven starts for club and country. Georgia pressed for an equaliser, with Mikautadze missing the target and a late free-kick hitting the post, but they were unable to break through. Turkish substitute Kerem Aktürkoğlu then sealed the victory, breaking clear on the counter-attack to score into an empty net.
This thrilling encounter at Signal Iduna Park will be remembered as a classic, with Turkey’s skill and resilience earning them a well-deserved win to start their Euro 2024 journey.
