Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has honored highlife music icon Chief Mike Ejeagha by renaming Obinagu Road in Abakpa Nike after him.
The renaming was announced during the inauguration of several newly constructed and reconstructed roads in the area on Monday, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
In addition to the newly renamed Mike Ejeagha Road, the Governor also inaugurated Mike Ejeagha Crescent, Texaco Bus Stop-Ifo Road, and Nkpor Street.
During the event, Governor Mbah visited Ejeagha at his residence and pledged the State Government’s commitment to his upkeep, referring to him as “a living legend.”
Mbah stated the importance of the road renaming as part of his administration’s broader infrastructure goals. He highlighted that the current projects were part of his commitment to improving urban roads across Enugu, recalling the previous award of 71 urban roads and 10 rural roads in 2023.
The Governor also announced upcoming plans for further road developments, including the dualization of Penocks Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. Mbah reassured residents of his dedication to enhancing road infrastructure and delivering on his promises.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Gerald Otiji, and the Special Adviser on Project Development and Implementation, Uche Atu, emphasized that the newly inaugurated roads were constructed with a focus on durability and user convenience.
In response to the honor, Ejeagha’s children, Emma and Elizabeth, expressed their gratitude, stating that the renaming would be remembered well beyond their father’s lifetime.
