Enugu Electricity Distribution Company To Phase Out Old Prepaid Meters By November 24.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has called on residents of the South-East to upgrade their prepaid meters by 24 November, as part of a nationwide exercise affecting all Standard Transfer Specification (STS) compliant prepaid meters.
Mr Emeka Ezeh, EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, emphasised the need for the upgrade, explaining that the initiative stems from the Token Identifier (TID) rollover, which is impacting similar meters worldwide. Ezeh reminded customers that without the upgrade, existing STS prepaid meters would no longer accept credit tokens from November 24 onwards.
The EEDC has transitioned to its new vending system, “SuperEdge,” ensuring that the upgrade process will be straightforward for customers. Prepaid meters that are not upgraded will still function with any remaining credits; however, they will not accept new tokens once those credits are exhausted.
Ezeh also noted that customers who have not recharged since February 2024 would receive Key Change Tokens (KCTs) with their next recharge. This upgrade requires inputting three sets of 20-digit tokens, each followed by pressing the “enter” button on the meter. He clarified that this process is free of charge.
Additionally, EEDC advised customers with unused, previously purchased tokens to load them before starting the upgrade. Once a meter is upgraded, it will not accept any old tokens, and refunds for unused tokens will not be available.
For convenient meter recharges, customers can use “EnergyPay” through the EEDC website or the EEDC Connect App. EEDC’s customer service is available for inquiries and further assistance regarding the upgrade at 0208 4700 100.
