Enugu Air Takes Flight: New State-Owned Airline Launches Domestic Operations Across Nigeria.

Enugu Air, the state-owned airline of Enugu State, officially commenced domestic flight operations today, marking a historic milestone for Nigeria’s aviation sector. The launch, held at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, signals the state’s ambition to transform Enugu into a major aviation hub, boosting connectivity, trade, and tourism in the Southeast region.

The airline, a cornerstone of Governor Peter Mbah’s vision for a modern, integrated transport system, began operations with a fleet of three Embraer jets—two E170s and one E190—acquired through a partnership with XEJet, a Nigerian carrier providing operational support. Initial routes connect Enugu with Abuja and Lagos, forming a strategic “golden triangle” to facilitate efficient travel to Nigeria’s key economic hubs. Plans are underway to expand services to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Kano, and other major cities, with ambitions for regional flights across West and Central Africa later this year.

Governor Mbah, speaking at the inauguration, described the launch as a “landmark moment for Ndi Enugu,” emphasising that Enugu Air is a people-driven project aimed at empowering traders, students, investors, and travellers. “This airline is not just infrastructure; it’s an economic enabler and a job creator,” he said, highlighting its role in positioning Enugu as a premier destination for investment and tourism. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who attended the ceremony, praised Mbah’s leadership and urged the state to ensure the airline is run professionally, avoiding the bureaucratic pitfalls that led to the collapse of Nigerian Airways.

The launch follows significant upgrades to Akanu Ibiam International Airport, including recent runway repairs and plans for terminal enhancements, positioning it to handle increased passenger traffic and future international operations. Enugu Air’s entry into the market is expected to intensify competition with established carriers like Air Peace, potentially driving down fares and improving service quality for passengers. Industry experts note that the airline’s modern, fuel-efficient fleet and focus on operational reliability could address long-standing connectivity challenges in the Southeast.

Local residents and business leaders have hailed the initiative. Architect Chibuikem Emmanuel Onyekachi, Managing Director of Powell Homes and Shelters Ltd, called it a “futuristic response” to regional mobility issues, noting that improved air access will attract investors previously deterred by logistical constraints. The Chairman of Enugu State Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, urged citizens to support the airline, describing it as a vital link to global markets.

As Enugu Air takes to the skies, its launch represents a bold step towards economic transformation and regional integration. With a focus on sustainability and strategic public-private partnerships, the airline aims to reshape Nigeria’s aviation landscape, offering more travel options and fostering growth in Enugu and beyond.
