Elanga Shines As Nottingham Forest Defeat Manchester United To Boost Champions League Hopes.
Anthony Elanga once called Old Trafford home, but on Tuesday night, he left Manchester United trailing in his wake.
The 22-year-old winger produced a stunning solo effort, sprinting 70 yards before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner, sealing Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 victory over his former club. Despite the moment of brilliance, Elanga showed respect by refusing to celebrate against the team where he spent a decade developing his craft.
The win keeps Forest’s Champions League ambitions alive, as they remain third in the Premier League with a 10-point lead over Newcastle in sixth. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo was full of praise for his winger, calling the goal “the perfect counter-attack,” while captain Ryan Yates described Elanga as “a midfielder’s dream.”
Reflecting on his journey, Elanga acknowledged that his move to Forest in 2023 was the right decision. “Coming here is about playing and developing. I appreciate Manchester United so much because I learned a lot there, but I am enjoying my football and want to keep improving,” he told TNT Sports.
Elanga’s impressive return of six goals and eight assists this season has been crucial to Forest’s success. His relentless speed has also been a standout feature, with statistics showing he spends more time sprinting than any other player in the Premier League.
United’s current manager, Rúben Amorim, downplayed his departure, highlighting the immense pressure young players face at the club. “Sometimes, at United, you don’t have time. The pressure is too big, and sometimes you should have time for these kids to develop,” he explained.
For Elanga, however, the transition to Forest has been a game-changer. “I feel like I have a purpose here,” he previously shared. “I have no regrets because I’m playing fantastic football with this team, and we’re in a great place.”
That place could soon include Champions League football, and with an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City on the horizon, Forest’s season continues to hold exciting possibilities.
