Egypt are going home following their penalty shootout loss in the hands of DR. Congo
The highest record holders of the AFCON tournament Egypt has crashed out of the AFCON 2023 tournament on going in Cote d’Ivoire.
The Pharoahs played out a 1:1 draw in Full time before proceeding into Extra time and still nothing could separate the two sides as they both gave their all in the contest.
DR Congo took the lead through Elia in the 37th minute before Mostafa equalized from the spot for the Pharoahs in the closing stages of the first half to bring the game level.
Resumption of hostilities continued in the second half but all efforts from both sides couldn’t produce a goal.
Egypt who managed to qualify for the round 16 having failed to win any match all through the tournament playing 4 draws in 4 matches before eventually losing to DR Congo 7:8 in penalty shootout.
The Democratic Republic of Congo remain on course for their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 50 years after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Egypt. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi was the unlikely hero as his spot-kick sent DRC through to the quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw.
DR Congo will now face off against Guinea who saw off the challenge of Equatorial Guinea in the first match played earlier.
Household names continue to disappoint in this year’s AFCON tournament with the likes of Algeria, Ghana, Tunisia, Cameroon and now Egypt all Bundled Out Of The Tournament.
