The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to the public regarding a planned protest allegedly orchestrated by corrupt individuals.
According to a press statement released on July 3, 2024, the EFCC disclosed that a shadowy group is actively recruiting young Nigerians, including students, through social media to participate in a protest against the Commission’s operations.
The EFCC, while acknowledging the right of citizens to protest, expressed concerns over evidence suggesting that corrupt elements under investigation or prosecution are exploiting this protest to incite a national uprising.
The Commission highlighted the potential threat to Nigeria’s peace and security posed by such activities, particularly around its office locations nationwide.
In response to these emerging threats, the EFCC, in collaboration with other security agencies, is taking necessary measures to maintain law and order across the country.
The Commission also appealed to parents, guardians, and heads of tertiary institutions to ensure their wards are not manipulated into participating in what it termed a proxy war against the EFCC by vested corrupt interests.
Dele Oyewale, Head of Media & Publicity for the EFCC, emphasized that the Commission’s efforts in combating corruption and cybercrime are crucial for safeguarding the future of Nigeria’s youth. He warned that further degeneration in Nigeria’s global reputation as a hub for fraudsters could have dire consequences for the nation’s future.
