EFCC Detains Former Sokoto Governor Tambuwal Over Alleged ₦189 Billion Fraud.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, over allegations of fraudulent cash withdrawals totalling N189 billion. The arrest, which took place on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, follows a months-long investigation into suspected violations of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Tambuwal, who served as Sokoto State Governor from 2015 to 2023 and previously as Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived at the EFCC’s offices around 11:30 a.m. for questioning. A senior EFCC official, speaking anonymously, revealed that the probe centres on unauthorised withdrawals of public funds during Tambuwal’s tenure, described as a “clear violation” of anti-money laundering laws. The scale of the alleged fraud has sparked widespread attention, with some reports suggesting it could be one of Nigeria’s largest subnational financial probes in recent years.
The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement, and its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, declined to comment until the interrogation is complete. Tambuwal, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has not publicly responded to the allegations. His detention has fuelled online discussions, with some questioning the timing of the arrest amid speculations about his involvement in an opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The investigation aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s push to combat corruption and enhance transparency in public finance. No charges have been filed yet, but the EFCC is expected to provide further details as the inquiry progresses. The case underscores the agency’s ongoing efforts to hold public officials accountable and restore trust in Nigeria’s governance structures.
Public reactions remain mixed, with some praising the EFCC’s actions as a step towards justice, while others, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have raised concerns about potential political motivations behind the probe. Nigerians await further updates as the EFCC continues its scrutiny of Tambuwal’s financial dealings during his governorship.
