On Democracy Day, Edo State Civil Society Organisations (EDOSCO) took to the streets to protest against the persistent economic hardships facing Nigerians.
The protest, which occurred on Wednesday, also included Oberaifo Udoh, the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC).
The demonstrators urged the Nigerian government to take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of its citizens. EDOSCO’s spokesperson, Kola Edokpayi, expressed deep frustration with the current state of the nation, specifically criticizing the administration under President Bola Tinubu.
Edokpayi pointed to the severe impact of hunger, poverty, and economic decline on the masses. “We are demanding that this country be fixed to avoid further agitation for self-determination as seen in the South East. The current leaders have failed woefully,” he said.
The protesters called for policies to create jobs, attract investors, and improve national security and power supply. They condemned the rise in tariffs despite the inconsistent power supply and urged the government to end the suffering of the masses to prevent further unrest.
Oberaifo Udoh also spoke at the protest, stating the urgency for action from all levels of government. He noted that the extreme economic hardship, coupled with widespread insecurity and senseless violence, has left many Nigerians unable to feed their families.
