D’Tigers Secure Afrobasket 2025 Qualification With Resilient Performance Against Uganda.
Nigeria’s national basketball team, D’Tigers, have officially secured their place in the 2025 Afrobasket tournament in Angola, marking a remarkable turnaround in their qualification campaign.
After a disappointing start in the first window of qualifiers, where they failed to secure a single victory, D’Tigers approached the second window with renewed determination under the leadership of Deji Akindele. With their hopes hanging in the balance, they needed wins against Libya and Uganda to remain in contention.
Displaying resilience and skill, D’Tigers staged a comeback to defeat Libya 75-70, with standout performances from Caleb Agada, Talib Zanna, and the rest of the squad. They followed up with an emphatic 87-67 triumph over Uganda, significantly strengthening their qualification bid.
With these victories, D’Tigers accumulated seven points and initially required one more win against Cape Verde to seal their place in the tournament. However, FIBA has since confirmed that all teams in Group B have qualified for Afrobasket 2025, making the final group game against Cape Verde inconsequential in terms of qualification.
Despite this, D’Tigers will be eager to conclude their qualification campaign on a high note when they face Cape Verde on Sunday at 16:00 Nigerian time. Their recent performances have reignited confidence in the team’s potential as they prepare for the continental championship next year.
