The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kirikiri Lighter Terminal (KLT), has intercepted a consignment of cannabis indica valued at N265 million in Lagos.
The drugs, weighing 51.25 kilograms, were seized in collaboration with the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in September.
In a statement on Thursday, the Customs Area Controller, Joy Edeldouk, confirmed the seizure while handing over the illicit drugs to NDLEA officers at the KLT command in Apapa, Lagos.
Edeldouk highlighted that the interception violates the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023, Section 55 sub-sections 1C and 1F, adding that the act demonstrated the command’s ongoing dedication to preventing the entry of harmful substances into the country.
“The negative impact of drugs such as cannabis indica is severe, ranging from the destruction of lives to fueling crime and violence,” she said. “By intercepting these dangerous substances, we are safeguarding our communities and protecting our vulnerable youth.”
The seized cannabis and suspects were handed over to NDLEA for further investigation and prosecution. Edeldouk vowed that the suspects would face the full consequences of the law and warned importers against attempting to test the NCS’s resolve in combating illegal importation.
The Customs boss reiterated that the NCS, alongside partner agencies, will continue to intensify efforts to rid the country of dangerous contraband while ensuring that legitimate trade is facilitated without hindrance.
