“Concerns Over Character”: Gary Lineker Reveals Why Top Clubs Shunned Victor Osimhen

“Concerns Over Character”: Gary Lineker Reveals Why Top Clubs Shunned Victor Osimhen.

Former England and Barcelona striker Gary Lineker has claimed that several top European clubs backed out of signing Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen due to concerns about his character, sparking fresh debate about the factors influencing high-profile football transfers.

Osimhen, now a permanent fixture at Turkish giants Galatasaray following a £64.8 million move from Napoli, was previously linked with Premier League sides Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal, as well as Paris Saint-Germain. The 26-year-old, renowned for his pivotal role in Napoli’s 2022-23 Serie A triumph, was considered one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers. However, Lineker suggested that off-field issues may have cooled interest from some clubs.

Speaking on *The Rest is Football* podcast, Lineker lauded Osimhen’s talent, saying, “He was sensational for Napoli, absolutely brilliant.” Yet, he added, “I’ve heard through the grapevine that some clubs were wary because he occasionally goes off the radar for a few days, raising slight concerns about his character.” This claim has raised eyebrows, given Osimhen’s proven track record on the pitch.

Micah Richards, Lineker’s co-host and former Manchester City defender, expressed shock at Osimhen’s move to Galatasaray, describing it as a “massive” but surprising choice for a player of his quality. “He’d be a top-three No. 9 in the Premier League, no question,” Richards said, underscoring the striker’s potential to thrive in England.

Osimhen’s loan stint at Galatasaray last season, where he scored 37 goals and provided seven assists in 41 matches, evidently convinced the Turkish club to secure his services permanently. However, Lineker’s comments highlight a broader caution among European clubs, possibly influenced by unverified reports about Osimhen’s conduct. Former Napoli manager Francesco Calzona recently remarked that Osimhen struggles with criticism, urging him to show greater humility, while Nigerian analyst Segun Agbade pointed to a public spat with former Super Eagles coach Finidi George as potentially damaging to his reputation.

Despite these concerns, Osimhen’s on-field brilliance remains undeniable. His pace, power, and clinical finishing have made him a standout performer, and his success in Turkey suggests he is far from finished. Whether Lineker’s claims hold weight or are merely speculative, Osimhen’s journey at Galatasaray could silence doubters and reignite interest from Europe’s elite.

The saga reflects the intricate dynamics of the transfer market, where character assessments can weigh as heavily as talent. As Osimhen continues to dazzle in Istanbul, his next steps will be closely watched, with many wondering if he can overcome perceived challenges and return to Europe’s biggest stages.
