The 2nd Memorial Lecture in honor of the late Bashir Othman Tofa, organized by the Kano State Concerned Citizen Initiative, was marked by heartfelt tributes and encomiums. The event saw a series of speakers lauding Tofa’s exemplary qualities as a family man, friend, and influential figure in politics and business.

Reflecting on Tofa’s role as a family man, one speaker noted how he embodied values of love, commitment, and sacrifice, setting a standard that left a lasting impression. The enduring friendship shared between the speaker and Tofa was described as a tapestry woven with threads of joy, challenges, and a spiritual dimension stemming from Tofa’s profound religious beliefs.

In the realm of politics and business, Tofa was praised for carving a path of distinction marked by principles, dedication to public service, and a commitment to positive impact. His entrepreneurial spirit and strategic vision in the business world laid the foundation for a thriving legacy that continues to endure.

The memorial lecture, which took place amid the Kano State Concerned Citizen Initiative’s organizing efforts, provided a poignant opportunity for attendees to reminisce about shared laughter, deep conversations, and countless memories that defined the enduring friendship with Tofa. While Tofa’s physical presence may be absent, the impact of his influence resonates in the hearts and lives of those he touched.





Tributes took center stage during the event, with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf praising Tofa’s philanthropic endeavors, dedication to uplifting the less privileged, and contributions to economic development. The governor highlighted Tofa’s trailblazing role in the business world, emphasizing his exceptional leadership, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit.

The late Tofa’s political journey was characterized by courage, integrity, and a deep love for the nation, as noted by the governor. Tofa’s grassroots political engagement, understanding of people’s challenges, and championing of their causes were acknowledged. His presidential aspiration under the National Republican Convention Party showcased his belief in a democratic Nigeria and a desire to serve the nation at the highest level.

The Convener of the event, AB Mahmoud, SAN, described Tofa as an elder statesman who lived a fulfilled life dedicated to patriotism and the development of the common man. General Martin Luther Agwai, delivering the keynote address virtually, remembered Tofa as a peacelover, peace builder, and a generous person committed to economic development and unity.

Former President General Abdussalam Abubakar, United Nations Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed, and the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, among others, also spoke highly of Tofa’s virtues, intelligence, and commitment. The event was attended by captains of industries, influential personalities, public office holders, and traditional leaders.

Bashir Othman Tofa, the presidential candidate of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) in the June 12, 1993 election, passed away on January 3, 2022, and was laid to rest at Hajj Camp Cemetery in Kano metropolis.
