Champions League Final Preview: PSG Vs Inter Milan – A Clash Of Contrasts In Munich.

The footballing world turns its attention to the Allianz Arena on Saturday, 31 May 2025, as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) face Inter Milan in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League final, kicking off at 8:00 PM BST. This tantalising showdown, the first competitive meeting between these two European giants, pits PSG’s youthful, high-pressing flair against Inter’s disciplined, experienced tactical prowess, promising a thrilling battle for the coveted trophy.

The Road to the Final

PSG, under the guidance of Luis Enrique, have defied expectations to reach their second Champions League final, having lost to Bayern Munich in 2020. After a shaky league phase, finishing 15th with 13 points, they roared through the knockout stages, dismantling Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the play-offs before eliminating Premier League heavyweights Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal (3-1 aggregate in the semi-finals). Their attacking dynamism, led by Ousmane Dembélé’s 25 goals in 28 appearances in 2025, has been a hallmark of their campaign.

Inter Milan, managed by Simone Inzaghi, have reached their second final in three years, having fallen to Manchester City in 2023. The Serie A runners-up finished fourth in the league phase with an impressive defensive record, conceding just once in eight matches. Their knockout journey saw them dispatch Feyenoord, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona in a thrilling 7-6 aggregate semi-final, capped by Davide Frattesi’s extra-time winner. Inter’s resilience and clinical counter-attacking have been key to their success.

Tactical Breakdown

PSG’s 4-3-3 formation thrives on relentless pressing and fluid attacking play. Their midfield trio of João Neves, Vitinha, and Fabián Ruiz provides control and ball recovery, while wingers Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and either Désiré Doué or Bradley Barcola, alongside the central Dembélé, create a dynamic front three. Full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes add width and pace, but PSG’s vulnerability to set pieces—conceding 11 goals from dead balls in Ligue 1—could be a concern. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s heroics have been pivotal in their run.

Inter’s 3-5-2 system offers defensive solidity and counter-attacking threat. Wing-backs Denzel Dumfries and Federico Dimarco will be crucial in both containing PSG’s wingers and exploiting spaces on the flanks. The midfield, anchored by Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Nicolò Barella, combines experience with tenacity, while strikers Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram provide clinical finishing. Inter’s experience, with 43.3% of their Champions League minutes played by players over 30, gives them an edge in high-stakes moments.

Key Battles

Denzel Dumfries vs. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia: Dumfries, who contributed five goal involvements in the semi-finals, faces a stern test against Kvaratskhelia’s dribbling and creativity. This duel on Inter’s right flank could be decisive.

PSG’s Midfield vs. Inter’s Structure: PSG’s Neves, Vitinha, and Ruiz will aim to dominate possession, but Inter’s compact midfield, led by Çalhanoğlu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, will look to disrupt and transition quickly.

Set Pieces: Inter’s aerial prowess, with a high duel win rate, could exploit PSG’s weakness defending set pieces, potentially swinging the game.

Team News

PSG have a near-fully fit squad, with Dembélé recovered from a hamstring issue and Kvaratskhelia rested after missing the French Cup final. Presnel Kimpembe is the only notable absentee. Inter have no major injury concerns, with Martínez and Benjamin Pavard expected to be fit. Yann Bisseck’s knee issue may see Francesco Acerbi start in the back three.

Predicted Line-ups:

PSG (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha, Ruiz; Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Doué.

Inter (3-5-2): Sommer; Acerbi, Bisseck, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Martínez, Thuram.

Form and Context

PSG, unbeaten in 30 Ligue 1 matches and fresh off a French Cup win, are in scintillating form, averaging 2.8 goals per game in the knockout stages. Inter, who pushed Napoli to the wire in Serie A, have lost just once in 14 Champions League matches this season, showcasing their resilience. With PSG having secured Ligue 1 and the French Cup, while Inter are aiming for their fourth European title.

Historical Context

This is only the second Champions League final between French and Italian sides, following Marseille’s 1-0 win over AC Milan in Munich in 1993. The Allianz Arena has a history of crowning first-time winners, including Chelsea in 2012, which bodes well for PSG. Inter, however, draw confidence from their 2010 triumph under José Mourinho.

Prediction

Opta’s supercomputer gives PSG a 56.6% chance of victory, with bookmakers listing them as slight favourites at +120, while Inter are at +240. The match is expected to be tight, with PSG’s attacking flair potentially undone by Inter’s tactical discipline and set-piece threat. Expect goals, given both teams’ knockout-stage scoring records, but Inter’s experience could tip the scales. Score Prediction: PSG 1-2 Inter Milan.

Final Thoughts

This final is a clash of youth versus experience, flair versus structure. PSG’s dynamic attack meets Inter’s resolute defence in a match that could hinge on fine margins. With both sides boasting remarkable football talents and astute managers, Munich is set for a spectacle that could redefine their legacies.
