CBCN President Pays Tribute To Late Pope Francis, Hails Legacy Of Unity And Compassion.

The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has paid glowing tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing him as a spiritual leader who championed unity, dialogue, and compassion throughout his papacy.

In a heartfelt statement, Ugorji highlighted Pope Francis’s commitment to ecumenism and interfaith dialogue, noting that he worked tirelessly to foster greater understanding and cooperation among various Christian denominations and faith communities. He praised the late Pontiff’s efforts in promoting a culture of mutual respect, peace, and tolerance.

“The reign of Pope Francis was marked by his unwavering advocacy for the marginalised and vulnerable. He consistently reminded the Church of the importance of serving the poor and promoting social justice,” Ugorji stated.

He also lauded the numerous reforms initiated by Pope Francis during his time as the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church. These included updates to the Church’s liturgical books and the establishment of new departments within the Vatican Office, aimed at enhancing pastoral care and administration.

Ugorji made special mention of the Pope’s landmark encyclical, *Laudato Si’*, which he said brought environmental issues to the forefront of global discussions. “His call for environmental protection and sustainable living sparked worldwide dialogue on climate change and the need to care for our common home,” he said.

Remembering the Pope’s personal attributes, Ugorji reflected on his humility, compassion, and deep commitment to service. “Pope Francis was revered across the globe for his simplicity and dedication to the well-being of others. His legacy will continue to inspire millions for generations to come,” he added.

Following the announcement of the Pope’s passing by the Vatican, Ugorji noted that the funeral will adhere to the updated liturgical book for papal funeral rites, which Pope Francis himself approved in April 2024. The ceremony, he said, will be simple and solemn, in keeping with the Pope’s wish for a more austere and faith-centred celebration.

He called on all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for the peaceful repose of the late Pope and for the continued unity and strength of the Catholic Church during this period of mourning.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025, at 7:35 AM in his residence at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, at the age of 88. His papacy began on 13 March 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

He took the name Francis in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi, reflecting his lifelong commitment to humility, peace, and care for creation.
