Cardiff City FC Parts Ways With Omer Riza, Aaron Ramsey To Take Charge For Season’s Finale.

Cardiff City Football Club has announced that Omer Riza has been relieved of his duties as First Team Manager with immediate effect. Club captain and Welsh football icon Aaron Ramsey will step into the role of interim manager for the final three matches of the 2024/25 EFL Championship season, starting with Monday’s home clash against Oxford United at Cardiff City Stadium.

The decision to part ways with Riza comes after a challenging season for the Bluebirds, who currently sit 22nd in the Championship table with 35 points from 43 matches, facing the looming threat of relegation to League One. Riza, who took over as permanent manager in September 2024 following Erol Bulut’s departure, oversaw a mixed run of results, with the team struggling for consistency despite a brief upturn in form earlier in the year. A recent 2-1 defeat to relegation rivals Plymouth Argyle proved to be the final straw, prompting the club’s board to act.

A club statement read: “Cardiff City FC can confirm that Omer Riza has been relieved of his duties as First Team Manager. We thank Omer for his efforts and wish him well in his future endeavours. Aaron Ramsey will lead the Club for the remaining three games of the Championship season, beginning with Monday’s match at home to Oxford United. #CityAsOne”

Ramsey, 34, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having earned 84 caps for Wales and enjoyed a distinguished career with Arsenal, Juventus, and Nice. The midfielder, who rejoined his boyhood club in 2023, has been a talismanic figure for Cardiff despite battling injuries this season. His leadership on and off the pitch, coupled with his deep connection to the club, made him the natural choice to guide the team through this critical period.

“I’m honoured to step up and lead Cardiff City for these final three games,” Ramsey said in a brief statement on the club’s official website. “This club means everything to me, and I’ll give my all to ensure we finish the season strongly. We need our fans behind us now more than ever.”

Ramsey’s first test comes against Oxford United on Monday, followed by an away trip to Bristol City and a season-ending home match against Middlesbrough. With only three points separating Cardiff from safety, the Bluebirds’ survival hopes hinge on Ramsey’s ability to galvanise the squad and harness the passionate support of the Cardiff faithful.

Fans have rallied behind Ramsey’s appointment, with many taking to social media to express their support. “Aaron Ramsey is Cardiff through and through. If anyone can inspire the lads to stay up, it’s him. Let’s get behind him! #CityAsOne,” wrote one supporter on X. However, some expressed concerns about the timing of Riza’s departure, with one fan noting, “Sacking Riza with three games left feels desperate. Ramsey’s a legend, but this is a massive ask.”

Riza, 47, joined Cardiff as a youth coach in 2021 before stepping up to the first team under Bulut. His tenure as manager saw moments of promise, including a 2-0 win over rivals Swansea City in March, but a run of five losses in the last seven matches left the club in a precarious position. The former Arsenal and West Ham striker departs with a record of 8 wins, 6 draws, and 14 losses in 28 matches.

As Cardiff prepare for a pivotal week, all eyes will be on Ramsey to deliver the results needed to preserve the club’s Championship status. The Bluebirds’ fight for survival promises to be a dramatic finale to a turbulent season, with the club urging supporters to unite behind Ramsey and the team. “We are Cardiff City, and we fight together,” the club’s statement concluded. “#CityAsOne”
