The Canadian Embassy and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) have unveiled a strategic partnership.
This was announced during a high-level meeting in Abuja, promising to streamline migration processes and leverage the potential of Nigeria’s diaspora for mutual benefit.
Dr. Jamie Christoff, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, emphasized the importance of the partnership during his visit to NiDCOM Chairman/CEO in Abuja.
He stated, “I understand the impact of large diaspora groups and their contributions in Canada. Nigeria’s diaspora is among our top 5 migrant groups and also a central pillar in Nigeria’s economy. It is important for us to help these Nigerians migrate regularly.”
Highlighting the need for cooperation between the two entities, Dr. Christoff added, “This can be achieved through regular engagements with Nigerians, knowledge and information sharing on the right steps to regular migration and what to expect in Canada.”
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, expressed appreciation for the partnership and outlined ongoing projects aimed at strengthening ties between Nigerian diaspora communities and their homeland.
She said, “We are committed to harnessing the potential of our diaspora for mutual benefit. With Canada’s support, we are implementing innovative initiatives such as the Canada Pull Factor project to streamline data and enhance engagement with Nigerians in Canada.”
Dabiri-Erewa also highlighted various strategies implemented by NiDCOM to engage with Nigerians in diaspora, including the National Diaspora Policy and the Diaspora Investment Trust Fund, among others.
“This year, we will be hosting the Nigeria-Canadian Business Summit in Canada and also a Nigeria Day, to bring together this large diaspora group to navigate ways to make impact, both in the host country and back home,” she added.
