Cameroon defeated Gambia in a dramatic 3-2 win to qualify for the round of 16 at the on going AFCON 2023 on Tuesday.
Cameroon needed the maximum 3 point in their Group C clash with Gambia, to stand a chance of progressing after just one point in two games group games.
The first half ended 0:0 before Cameroon got their opening goal in the 56 minutes thanks to Toko Ekambi, however Ablie Jallow leveled things in the 72 minutes to make the scoreline 1:1
Subsequently Gambia took the lead 2-1courtesy of Ebrima Colley with 85 minutes gone before Cameroon managed to equalised two minutes later, all thanks to Gambia’s player James Gomez own goal.
Then, incredibly, Christopher Wooh stepped up with a 91st minute winner to fire Cameroon into second place which was enough to send the indomitable Lions through to the knockout stages.
The result means the five-time AFCON winners finish second on four points while Senegal, who thrashed Guinea 3-0, top with nine points. Meaning Cameroon will now take on Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the round of 16 on Saturday 27th January 2024.
The two neighbouring countries Cameroon and Nigeria last played each other in the round of 16 at the 2019 tournament in Egypt. With the Super Eagles coming out on top 3-2 in that encounter.
The result officially confirmed Ghana’s Elimination from the tournament for the second time in a row having only just two points from 3 group games.
