The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed the financial rewards for participating nations at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament (AFCON prize money) in Cote d’Ivoire.
CAF revealed earlier that the winner of AFCON 2023 will take home $7 million for lifting the trophy while the runners-up will pocket $4 million. The two losing semi-finalists (two teams) will each receive $2.5 million.
Further down the ranks, the losing quarter-finalists (four teams) will each receive $1.3 million. The eight teams knocked out in the round of 16 will get $800,000 each.
The Super Eagles being first team to enter the semi-final stage have secured the sum of $2.5m for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). And they will be hoping of laying their hands on the trophy for the fourth time which will in turn make NFF $7m richer if the dream of winning the AFCON comes through.
The eight quarterfinalists are Nigeria, Angola, DR Congo, Mali, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Cape Verde and South Africa.
However on Friday night, in the first and second quarter-final matches, Nigeria pipped Angola 1-0 while DR Congo thrashed Guinea 3-1 to book semifinal tickets respectively.
The action continues later today as the host nation Cote d’Ivoire face off against Mali by 6pm Nigerian time, while in the other fixtures, South Africa tackles Cape Verde 9pm Nigerian time for a ticket in the last four.
