The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a 40% increase in prize money for the winner of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
The official statement, released on Thursday via the CAF website, disclosed that the champion of the TotalEnergies AFCON tournament will now receive $7 million.
The 2023 AFCON, scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024, will feature 24 participating countries. CAF stated that the runner-up will be awarded $4 million, while each of the two semi-finalists will receive $2.5 million. Additionally, the four quarter-finalists will each get $1.3 million.
Patrice Motsepe, President of CAF, expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the past two years in enhancing the prize money for AFCON and other major competitions.
Motsepe emphasized the positive impact of the increased prize money, stating, “I am confident that a portion of the prize money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our member associations with their administrations.”
This move is seen as a step toward promoting and supporting football development across the continent.
