Burkina Faso Celebrates Significant Gains In Fight Against Terrorism.

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – The Burkinabè government has announced a remarkable milestone in its ongoing battle against terrorism, revealing that it now controls 72.7% of the nation’s territory, a substantial increase from just 40% in 2022. This progress, highlighted by Defence Minister Célestin Simporé, marks a turning point in the country’s efforts to reclaim land from jihadist groups and restore stability.

The advance has been attributed to strategic military operations, including the stabilisation of key areas such as the Sourou Valley, Djibo, and Diapaga, as well as the reopening of the Boungou Mine. These efforts have been bolstered by the government’s commitment to strengthening its security forces, with plans to expand troop numbers and acquire advanced equipment. The minister’s statement, delivered on 4 August 2025, underscores the success of operations like “Green Whirlwind 2,” which targeted terrorist strongholds in the Boucle du Mouhoun region.

Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo has also launched a review of ministerial contracts to ensure resources are effectively channelled into the fight against terrorism. This progress comes amidst challenges, including the displacement of over two million people and persistent attacks by groups such as al-Qaeda-affiliated JNIM and ISIS-Sahel. Despite a 17% decrease in terrorist attacks in 2023, the lethality of these incidents rose, with deaths increasing by 68% to 1,907, according to the Global Terrorism Index.

The government’s push to reclaim territory has not been without controversy, with reports of human rights abuses by security forces and pro-government militias, such as the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP). Nevertheless, the recapture of key regions has sparked hope among citizens, with many expressing cautious optimism about the prospect of lasting peace.

Burkina Faso’s transition government, led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré since the 2022 coup, has prioritised territorial integrity and governance reform under its Action Plan for Development and Stabilisation (2023-2025). The formation of the Alliance of Sahel States with Mali and Niger in 2023 further signals a regional commitment to combatting terrorism and fostering development.

As Burkina Faso continues its fight, the government’s progress in regaining control offers a glimmer of hope in a region long plagued by instability. With ongoing efforts to strengthen security and address humanitarian challenges, the nation is taking bold steps toward a more secure future.
