Breaking: Court Orders Senate To Reinstate Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

Breaking: Court Orders Senate To Reinstate Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

A Federal High Court in Nigeria has ruled that the Senate must immediately recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, declaring her six-month suspension unconstitutional and excessive. The decision, hailed as a significant victory for the senator and her constituents, was announced on Friday, 4 July 2025, sparking widespread discussion across the country.

The court’s ruling came after a legal challenge against the Senate’s decision to suspend Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central. The suspension, enacted earlier this year, was deemed to violate Section 14(2) of the Senate’s Privileges Act, which governs disciplinary actions against members. The judge argued that the penalty was disproportionate and deprived the senator’s constituents of their right to representation in the National Assembly.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, a prominent figure known for her outspoken advocacy on issues affecting her constituency, had faced criticism from some Senate colleagues, leading to her suspension. However, the court found that the process lacked fairness and failed to adhere to legal standards. The ruling mandates the Senate to reinstate her, allowing her to resume her legislative duties without delay.

The decision has been met with widespread approval from supporters, who argue that the suspension was politically motivated. Political analysts suggest this ruling could set a precedent for how the Senate handles internal disciplinary measures in the future, emphasising the need for transparency and adherence to legal protocols.

In response to the verdict, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed gratitude to the judiciary for upholding justice and vowed to continue serving her constituents diligently. The Senate has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but sources indicate that preparations are underway to comply with the court’s directive.

This development marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s political landscape, reinforcing the judiciary’s role in safeguarding democratic representation. As Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan prepares to return to her duties, the focus now shifts to how this ruling will influence ongoing debates about legislative accountability and fairness.
