President Tinubu Announces Passing of Army Chief, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who passed away at the age of 56. The news was conveyed on Wednesday morning by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that Lt. General Lagbaja died on Tuesday night in Lagos following a period of illness.
Born on 28 February 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja’s distinguished military career began in 1987 when he entered the Nigerian Defence Academy. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992 as part of the 39th Regular Course, he demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment throughout his service.
Appointed as Chief of Army Staff on 19 June 2023 by President Tinubu, Lt. General Lagbaja played significant roles in numerous internal security operations. His notable contributions included his command in operations such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Operation Udoka in the Southeast, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States.
An alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja held a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, underlining his dedication to professional growth and strategic leadership. His legacy of service to the nation is honoured by those who worked alongside him.
Lt. General Lagbaja is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children. In his tribute, President Tinubu extended his deepest condolences to the Lagbaja family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, honouring the late general’s contributions and commitment to Nigeria’s security and stability.
