Jake Paul Defeats Mike Tyson in Controversial Exhibition Match.
YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul claimed a points victory over two-time heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in a widely criticised bout that left fans frustrated. The eight-round exhibition, held in front of 70,000 spectators in Texas and streamed globally on Netflix, showcased a 27-year-old novice outlasting a 58-year-old legend far removed from his prime.
Tyson, who has not fought professionally in 19 years, struggled against Paul’s youthful athleticism and consistent jabs. The fight ended with judges unanimously scoring in Paul’s favour: 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73. Fans, however, were less impressed, with many leaving before the final announcement amid widespread booing.
Tyson’s Struggles Highlight the Age Gap
Tyson, entering the ring to a hero’s reception, quickly showed signs of age. Wearing a knee brace and moving sluggishly, the former champion landed only 18 punches compared to Paul’s 78. The veteran’s once-famous power and speed were absent, though he attempted to rally with a few early hooks.
Paul, donning the world’s most expensive boxing shorts, maintained control throughout, using his reach advantage to keep Tyson at bay. Despite landing a few solid jabs, the fight lacked the excitement fans hoped for, with neither boxer coming close to a knockout.
A Spectacle of Fame
The event generated enormous revenue, with ticket sales exceeding £14.1 million. Paul reportedly earned £30 million, while Tyson took home half that amount. The extravagant production saw Paul arrive in a customised green car, accompanied by WWE star Logan Paul and even a pigeon—an attempted gift for Tyson, a known pigeon enthusiast.
The crowd included boxing legends Lennox Lewis, Roy Jones Jr, and Evander Holyfield, as well as Netflix celebrities and NBA icon Shaquille O’Neal. While the bout disappointed purist boxing fans, it offered a spectacle fitting of its billing.
Is This the End for Tyson?
Despite his age and performance, Tyson suggested post-fight that he might consider another match, even hinting at a potential bout against Logan Paul. However, many hope this will be his last time in the ring, citing concerns for his health and safety.
Meanwhile, Paul celebrated his victory and reiterated his ambition to fight Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, a claim met with widespread scepticism given his struggle to dominate Tyson.
While the fight delivered on spectacle, it left questions about the legitimacy of such events and their impact on boxing’s reputation. For now, Tyson’s return serves as a reminder of the sport’s physical toll, while Paul continues his controversial rise in the boxing world.
