Borussia Dortmund Secure Champions League Last-16 Spot After Stalemate Against Sporting.
Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the Champions League last 16 after a goalless draw against Sporting in the second leg of their knockout play-off tie.
Having secured a commanding 3-0 victory in Lisbon last week, the German side entered the return leg at Signal Iduna Park with a significant advantage. Goals from Serhou Guirassy, Pascal Gross and Karim Adeyemi in the first leg had all but sealed their progression, making the second encounter a mere formality.
Dortmund dominated proceedings and had the opportunity to take the lead in the second half when they were awarded a penalty following Rui Silva’s foul on Adeyemi. However, the Sporting goalkeeper redeemed himself by denying Guirassy from the spot, keeping the score level.
Despite the goalless draw, last season’s runners-up comfortably advanced and will now prepare for a two-legged last-16 tie against either Aston Villa or Lille next month.
Sporting Struggle in Disappointing Display
Sporting, who currently lead the Portuguese league by two points, failed to produce a response and rarely troubled their hosts.
Dortmund, under Niko Kovač, remained unchanged from their first-leg triumph, maintaining control throughout the match. The game’s first real chance arrived in the 27th minute when Marcel Sabitzer tested Silva with a powerful strike from the edge of the box. Guirassy, the Champions League’s leading scorer this season with 10 goals, also forced a save before Sabitzer fired another effort over the bar.
After the interval, Dortmund continued to press, with Adeyemi and Daniel Svensson both testing Silva, who produced a series of fine saves. Guirassy’s missed penalty in the 58th minute kept the visitors in the game, while Giovanni Reyna struck the post and Emre Can saw a header disallowed for offside late on.
Though Dortmund were unable to find the net, their solid first-leg performance ensured safe passage to the next round, while Sporting’s European campaign came to an uninspiring end.
