Benue Governor Hyacinth Alia Dissolves Executive Council, Appoints Moses Atagher As Chief Of Staff.
Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has dissolved the State Executive Council (SEC), relieving all commissioners and the former Chief of Staff, Paul Biam, of their duties with immediate effect. The announcement, made on Wednesday, 30th July 2025, during the 12th SEC meeting of the year at Government House, Makurdi, marks a significant administrative overhaul as the governor approaches the midpoint of his tenure.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia directed all outgoing commissioners to promptly hand over their responsibilities to the permanent secretaries of their respective ministries. The dissolution, described as a strategic move to reinvigorate governance, affects only the commissioners, with other cabinet members retaining their positions. Alia expressed gratitude to the outgoing officials for their two years of service, urging those not reappointed to remain loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and continue supporting the state’s development. “Your exit paves the way for other citizens to contribute to Benue’s progress,” he said, emphasising the importance of inclusive governance.
In a concurrent move, the governor appointed Barrister Moses Atagher, a seasoned legal practitioner and former two-term Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, as the new Chief of Staff, replacing Paul Biam. Atagher, who also served as the acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank, brings extensive administrative experience to the role. His appointment, effective immediately, is seen as a strategic step to strengthen the governor’s inner circle as he repositions his administration for the second half of his term. “Mr. Atagher’s track record in public service makes him the right fit for this critical role,” Alia stated.
Speaking on behalf of the outgoing commissioners, former Attorney General Barrister Bemsen Mnyim expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve, describing it as a valuable learning experience. “Every stage in life where you are called to serve is a school. We have learnt a lot while working with you,” he told the governor, reflecting on the cabinet’s tenure.
Political observers suggest that the dissolution is part of Governor Alia’s broader strategy to enhance performance and accountability, potentially setting the stage for new appointments to drive his administration’s agenda. The move has sparked discussions across Benue, with many anticipating further announcements regarding the reconstitution of the SEC.
As Benue State navigates ongoing challenges, including security concerns and economic development, Alia’s decision to refresh his administration signals a commitment to delivering on his promises to the people. The appointment of Atagher, known for his administrative competence, has been warmly received, with expectations that he will play a pivotal role in advancing the governor’s vision for a prosperous and secure Benue.
