Bayelsa State to Host 2023/2024 NWFL Premiership Super Six Championship
In an exciting development for women’s football in Nigeria, the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially announced Bayelsa State as the proud host of the highly-anticipated 2023/2024 NWFL Premiership Super Six championship.
Scheduled to take place from Thursday, May 16th to Sunday, May 26th, 2023, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, this tournament promises to showcase the best of Nigerian women’s football talent.
Bayelsa’s selection as the host city was confirmed by the NWFL after careful consideration of bids from various states vying to stage this prestigious playoff competition.
Nkechi Obi, the NWFL chairman, expressed her congratulations to Bayelsa State, highlighting the opportunity to further boost women’s football in the region and elevate its profile across Nigeria.
“This is a great opportunity for Bayelsa to shine as hosts of the NWFL Premiership Super Six,” said Nkechi Obi. “We believe this tournament will not only be a thrilling showcase of talent but also a significant step in promoting women’s football in Bayelsa and Nigeria as a whole.”
The NWFL Premiership Super Six tournament marks a historic moment as it will be the first time Bayelsa State hosts this prestigious event.
Yenagoa, the capital city of Bayelsa, is also home to Bayelsa Queens, a team that has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years. In 2022, Bayelsa Queens claimed the domestic NWFL Premiership title, triumphed in the WAFU-B playoff, and secured a commendable third-place finish at the 2022 CAF Women’s Champions League held in Morocco.
The tournament format, as outlined by Modupe Shabi, the NWFL’s Chief Operating Officer, will feature a round-robin style, with each participating team engaging in five matches during the competition.
The participating clubs are expected to arrive in Yenagoa on Thursday, May 16th, followed by a draw and pre-match meeting on Friday, May 17th. The playoff matches will commence on Saturday, May 18th, with Matchday One and conclude with Matchday Five on Sunday, May 26th.
Six formidable teams will vie for the coveted Nigerian league crown in this year’s Super Six tournament. These teams include Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, Rivers Angels, Confluence Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and Heartland Queens.
The tournament’s winner will earn the right to represent Nigeria in the WAFU-B qualifiers for the 4th CAF Women’s Champions League, adding further prestige and excitement to the stakes of this competition.
