Barcelona Feminine defeated Lyon Ladies 2:0 in Uefa Champions League final, as they successfully defended their title yet again.
Barcelona cemented their place in football history by defending their Women’s Champions League title with a 2-0 victory over Lyon in the final, completing an unprecedented quadruple of trophies this season.
Barcelona’s dominance was evident as they added the Champions League to their trophy cabinet, alongside their domestic league and cup victories. The final, held in Bilbao, saw England international Lucy Bronze praise her team’s achievement, declaring, “We go down in history as one of the best teams in Europe.”
The match featured standout performances, including club captain Alexia Putellas, who scored minutes after being substituted in, securing the win in stoppage time. Aitana Bonmati had earlier given Barcelona the lead with a deflected strike, setting the stage for a memorable victory.
Putellas’ journey to this triumph was marked by resilience, having recovered from an anterior cruciate ligament injury last year. Her goal not only sealed the win but underscored her importance to the team. Bronze lauded Putellas, saying, “She’s the queen of Barcelona for a reason. She’s got the quality to do that in the last minute of the Champions League final.”
Keira Walsh, who joined Barcelona for a world-record fee from Manchester City in 2022, played a crucial role in the victory. Reflecting on the season, Walsh said, “We set out to win four trophies, and to do it in front of our fans was really special.”
The victory also marked the perfect send-off for manager Jonatan Giraldez, who will join American club Washington Spirit in the summer. “For [Giraldez] to go out like this was amazing. These girls are special,” Walsh added.
Barcelona’s triumph was a collective effort, with players and fans celebrating a historic season. The team’s achievements have solidified their status as one of Europe’s elite clubs, leaving a legacy that will be remembered for years to come.
