Barcelona Considering Sacking Head Coach Xavi Amidst Financial Concerns
Barcelona is contemplating the dismissal of head coach Xavi, despite previous assurances that he would continue leading the team. The 44-year-old had initially announced in January his intention to step down at the end of the season, but he was convinced to stay by club president Joan Laporta.
Recent comments made by Xavi during a news conference, however, have reportedly angered the club’s board, leading them to reconsider his position. The remarks suggested that Barcelona would struggle to compete financially with rivals Real Madrid and other top European teams, causing unrest among the club’s hierarchy.
“I think that Barca fans need to understand that the situation is really difficult, especially economically, to compete with Real Madrid in Spain and others in Europe,” Xavi stated. “We will adapt to this. It doesn’t mean that we don’t want to compete and fight for trophies. It is the situation for Barcelona at this time. We need stability and time.”
The favorite to replace Xavi is Barcelona B team manager Rafael Marquez. This speculation comes despite Barcelona’s away win at Almeria on Thursday.
Barcelona has had a challenging season, trailing 14 points behind Real Madrid in La Liga with only two games remaining. Real Madrid has already secured the La Liga title and is in the Champions League final. Additionally, they are set to sign France striker Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
Xavi, who took charge in November 2021 after leaving Qatari club Al Sadd, led Barcelona to the Spanish title in his first full season in charge in 2022-23. However, the team exited this season’s Champions League at the quarter-final stage following a defeat by PSG.
As Barcelona grapples with financial constraints and competitive pressures, the future of Xavi as head coach remains uncertain, with Rafael Marquez emerging as the likely candidate to take over.
