Joel Matip’s own goal deep into stoppage time gave Tottenham Hotspur victory over nine-man Liverpool in an eventful and contentious Premier League encounter. The Reds were compromised by two controversial red cards, the first was upgraded from a yellow after VAR intervention and was given to youngster Curtis Jones for a foul on Yves Bissouma after just 26 minutes early game substitute Diogo Jota followed him down the tunnel with more than 20 minutes remaining after picking up a quickfire double booking. The Reds had an opening goal by Luis Diaz ruled out by another controversial VAR decision, as the…

Newcastle’s patience paid off as they comfortably beat a Burnley side who remain in search of their first Premier League win of the season. Miguel Almiron put Eddie Howe’s side ahead against the run of play on 14 minutes with a brilliant long-range strike into the top corner. The Clarets had started the game strongly with an early chance for Zeki Amdouni, but Almiron’s strike took the wind out of their sails and Vincent Kompany’s men rarely threatened Nick Pope’s goal after. The Magpies grew into the game and dominated throughout both halves, with Elliot Anderson, Anthony Gordon and Alexander…
Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League season came crashing to an end as they were stunned 2-1 away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Wolves snatched a surprise lead 12 minutes in as the electric Pedro Neto burst down the right wing and aimed a cross in towards Matheus Cunha. Dias couldn’t stop the ball and instead accidentally sent it beyond Ederson to open the scoring. Forward came City in search of an equaliser but their aimless crosses into the box were gleefully nodded away by Wolves’ centre-backs, who had several shots from range to deflect away as well. The second…
Manchester United suffered a second successive defeat at home in the Premier League as Joachim Andersen’s superb strike gave Crystal Palace an impressive victory at Old Trafford. The teams were meeting for the second time in five days, with Erik ten Hag’s side comfortably winning 3-0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. But Palace rested a number of first-team players for that game and were a different proposition on Saturday as they produced the perfect away performance. After Tyrick Mitchell cleared Rasmus Hojlund’s effort off the line, Palace took the lead when Andersen superbly drove a first-time effort into the top…
Arsenal continued their impressive unbeaten run with a convincing 4-0 win over struggling Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. Despite entering the game without a win in the Premier League this season, Bournemouth made a confident start against an unbeaten Arsenal side. That good early work was undone, however, when Jesus’ far-post header struck the woodwork, with Saka reacting quickest to tap into an empty net with 16 minutes on the clock. It was the increasingly influential Odegaard who doubled Arsenal’s advantage a minute before half-time, calmly slotting his penalty into the bottom corner following Max Aarons’ late tackle on…
Victor Osimhen came off the bench to score as Napoli made it two wins in a week by beating Lecce 4-0 away in Serie A. The reigning Scudetto champions edged an entertaining first half and took the lead courtesy of a header from Leo Ostigard following a corner. Giovanni Simeone, who replaced Osimhen in the line-up, came agonisingly close to doubling their lead with a shot from the edge of the box that went wide. Lecce, who started the day on the same number of points as Napoli, should have equalised through Marin Pongracic, who fired over from six yards…
Ollie Watkins scored his second hat-trick of the season as Aston Villa delivered a ruthless display to thrash high-flying Brighton at Villa Park. Watkins gave Unai Emery’s side an early lead, finishing coolly into the left corner after Matty Cash had picked out the forward with a low cross. The 27-year-old went close with a rasping drive that flew inches wide, before doubling his personal tally with a low shot inside Jason Steele’s right-hand post. Sharper to the ball and stronger in the challenge, Villa were all over Brighton and increased their lead just five minutes later when Moussa Diaby’s…
