The President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has debunked reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) was not ready to provide crude for the take-off of it’s Refinery in Lagos. Dangote, while reacting to the media reports, described the NNPC Limited as a responsive partner that will provide the needed support for the commencement of operations at the 650,000 barrels per day Refinery. In a brief note issued on Wednesday, Dangote said the Mele Kyari-led NNPC was ready and willing to supply the Refinery with crude oil in few weeks’ time to enable the commencement of refining…

Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has rejected the ruling of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that voided his election and declared his opponent the winner. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tribunal on Wednesday declared Dr Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election. Yusuf, who contested on the banner of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), described the tribunal’s verdict as “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice”. He vowed to appeal against the judgement, and urged his supporters to remain calm. “I call on our people…
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana says he has “let the team down” and that they failed to get a result at Bayern Munich “because of me”. In an eventful game in Germany, Onana’s error gifted Bayern a crucial lead that they quickly doubled after United had started in disciplined fashion. A flurry of goals followed but United were always chasing and ultimately fell short, suffering a 4-3 loss. “This is the life of a goalkeeper,” Onana said in a post match interview. “It’s difficult. We started very good. After my mistake we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation…
Goals from Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Harry Kane and Mathys Tel gave Bayern a 4-3 win over Manchester United. United, for whom Rasmus Hojlund scored his first goal, looked sharp in attack, but poor defending and goalkeeping cost them once again. United started well and ought to have taken the lead early on, but Alphonso Davies made a fine tackle on Facundo Pellistri before Sven Ulreich saved Christian Eriksen’s subsequent shot. Then, on 28 minutes, Bayern took the lead, Sane playing into Kane, accepting a fine return, and slapping a tame effort over which Andre Onana somehow dived before, shortly…
Arsenal returned to the Champions League in style as they started their first campaign in six years with an impressive win over PSV Eindhoven at Emirates Stadium. The Gunners wrapped up victory in their opening Group B game with a scintillating first half display that saw them race into a 3-0 lead on a rain-soaked night in north London. Bukayo Saka opened the scoring after eight minutes, pouncing on a rebound when PSV keeper Walter Benitez could only push Martin Odegaard’s into the England winger’s path. Saka was involved again when Arsenal doubled their advantage 12 minutes later, laying the…
Lautaro Martinez broke Real Sociedad’s hearts, as his last-gasp strike earned Inter Milan a 1-1 draw in their opening UEFA Champions League group game. The Nerazzurri failed to land a single shot on target until grabbing their equaliser in the 87th minute, with a lacklustre display at both ends meaning they were lucky to escape with a point. The hosts could barely have dreamed of a better start, rattling the post through Ander Barrenetxea on three minutes, only to take the lead 60 seconds later when Brais Mendez capitalised on an error by Alessandro Bastoni. The game soon settled down…
Jude Bellingham scored an injury-time tap-in as Real Madrid left it late to beat Champions League debutants Union Berlin at the Santiago Bernabeu. Bellingham’s strike was his sixth goal in six matches for Madrid since joining Los Blancos this summer. Real Madrid were deserved winners, having twice hit the post in the second half, although Union looked set for a fairytale draw at the home of the record 14-time winners. The hosts, semi-finalists in last season’s competition, started brightly as Joselu headed Bellingham’s teasing cross over the bar. But Ancelotti’s side failed to kick on in the first period, although…
Ivan Perisic will miss the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury, Tottenham have confirmed. The 34-year-old will require surgery after being injured in training. The club said: “We can confirm that Ivan Perisic has suffered a complex anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee. “The experienced Croatia international sustained the injury in non-contact training and will undergo surgery. “Ivan will then commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff and is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season.” Perisic made his 50th appearance for Spurs in their 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield United on Saturday.
The Kano Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, declaring the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the March 18 election. Yusuf, who contested on the platform of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), was declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). While Nasir Gawuna, his APC rival congratulated him, the party proceeded to court. On Wednesday, the three-man panel ordered withdrawal of certificate of return which INEC presented to Governor Yusuf and directed a certificate of return to be issued to Gawuna. The court deducted 165,663 votes from Gov Yusuf total…
This match marks the return to the UEFA Champions League of both Arsenal and PSV Eindhoven after significant absences from Europe’s elite competition. Arsenal attack the Champions League for the first time since a 10-2 aggregate humbling at the hands of Carlo Ancelotti’s Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the 2016-17 tournament. PSV are also back in the big time after a four-season absence. Having suffered three eliminations in the qualifiers over that period, the Dutch side saw off Rangers in August to reach the group stage once again. This will be PSV’s 17th appearance in the competition, while Arsenal…
Real Madrid face newcomers Union Berlin in their first game of the Champions League campaign. This is Real Madrid’s 27th consecutive season in the Champions League, having won the competition for a record 14 times ( the most of any team). Union Berlin are the fifth side to face Real in their first-ever Champions League match, with each of the previous four losing (Internazionale 1998, Roma 2001, BATE Borisov 2008 and Zürich 2009). Union will also be the 15th different German side to feature in the Champions League, the most from any nation. Only three of the 14 previous Bundesliga…
