Nigeria Secures Second Place on African Games Medal Table
Team Nigeria demonstrated outstanding performance at the 13th African Games in Ghana, securing second place on the medals table with a total of 47 gold, 33 silver, and 40 bronze medals across 25 sports.
Weightlifting emerged as Nigeria’s most successful sport, contributing significantly to the medal tally with 32 medals, including 16 gold, 10 silver, and six bronze.
In athletics, Nigeria showcased remarkable achievements, earning 22 medals in various events. Tobi Amusan clinched her third consecutive gold medal in the women’s 100 meters hurdles and anchored the women’s 4×100 meters team to another gold. Ese Brume maintained her dominance in the women’s long jump, while Chukwuebuka Enekwechi excelled in the men’s shot put.
The wrestling team, led by Blessing Oborududu and Odunayo Adekuoroye, contributed significantly with 11 medals, showcasing Nigeria’s prowess in the sport.
Moreover, boxing and arm wrestling added to Nigeria’s success, with eight gold medals in boxing and 13 medals in arm wrestling.
Despite these impressive achievements, Nigeria’s medal haul was surpassed only by Egypt, which secured 189 medals, including 101 gold, 46 silver, and 42 bronze.
South Africa claimed the third position on the medals table with 106 medals, while Algeria and Tunisia completed the top five.
Looking ahead, the next edition of the African Games is scheduled to take place in Cairo, Egypt, in 2027, providing another opportunity for African athletes to showcase their talent and compete on the continental stage.
