Nigeria emerged as the top-performing nation following the conclusion of the athletics event at the African Games 2023.
The continent powerhouse secured a total of 21 medals, including 11 gold, six silver, and four bronze medals. This impressive feat marked Nigeria’s fourth-best performance in the history of the African Games.
Notable athletes such as Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi showcased their excellence by retaining their titles in the women’s 100m hurdles, women’s long jump, and men’s shot put, respectively.
In a historic moment, Chidi Okezie made history by becoming the first Nigerian in 37 years to win gold in the men’s 400m event.
Other outstanding performances include Ruth Usoro, Pamela Obiageri, and Amaechi Chinecherem Nnamdi, who clinched gold medals in their respective events.
Nigeria’s best-ever performance in the athletics event at the African Games dates back to 1995 when the athletes secured a total of 32 medals, comprising 15 gold, nine silver, and eight bronze medals.
