It is believed that Super Eagles can win AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire
Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro has expressed his desire to help the Super Eagles win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles last won the AFCON title in 2013 in South Africa with Sunday M’ba scoring the only goal.
The team failed to qualify for the 2015 edition but claimed the third position on their return in Egypt in 2019 with Super Eagles prolific forward Odion Ighalo winning the Golden boot with 5goals.
It was a disappointing outing for the super Eagles in Cameroon, after they failed to advance to the quarterfinal stage, has they were defeated by Tunisia in the Round of 16.
Peseiro is however, confident he can help restore the team’s lost glory.
“I came here for one goal; I want to win the next AFCON for my fantastic players and for Nigerians. I am confident because I believe in this team, I believe in the quality and the number of good players. I have followed Nigeria’s history in football from 1994 and other successful teams and I want to bring back that joy again,” Peseiro said during his visit to Nigeria’s sports minister, Sunday Dare on Wednesday.
“Nigeria is top 5 when it comes to football in Africa. I want to say appreciate the minister and the Football Federation for this opportunity to lead the national team. I will work round the clock to ensure we achieve as much success as possible and the journey starts now”.
The Super Eagles will begin their AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone at home on Thursday, with the aim of securing the 2023 AFCON ticket that would be a played in Côte d’Ivoire next year.
