Gambia not a match! for the Teranga lions of Senegal as they were beaten hands down in Yamoussouko.
Defending Champions Senegal began the defense of their title which they won last time out in Cameroon, with a brilliant performance against Gambia as they recorded their first win of the group stage.
The breakthrough came quite early enough for Senegal just barely four minutes into the match, when former Liverpool Star and current Al Nassr player, Sadio Mane set up Marseille’s Pape Gueye inside the box. And Gueye slotted the ball home into the low bottom corner with a precise low shot beyond Gambia’s Goalkeeper Baboucarr Gaye.
Despite having several chances to double the scoreline in the first half, Senegal couldn’t convert their chances and the first half ended 1 goal to nil in favour of the Teranga lions.
However, things changed quickly by the turn of the second half, as Gambia and Cardiff’s Midfielder Ebou Adams saw red for a rough challenge towards the closing minute of the first half and referee Redouane. J from Morocco didn’t hesitate to send him off the field.
Senegal quickly utilized the advantage as they doubled the score in the 52nd minute when Metz Midfielder Lamine Camara found the back of the net having been set up by Ismaila Sarr.
Lightening struck twice as Lamine Camara once again found the back of the net this time around being assisted by Iliman Ndiaye in the 86th minute. The 20year Old midfielder who produced a man of the match performance just might be the revelation of the tournament.
Gambia couldn’t show any more resolve as they were swept off by the impressive Senegal side who looked to be ready to put up a proper defensive charge of the title.
The Match ended 3 goals to nothing in favour of the Teranga lions.
Up next for Senegal is a match against Cameroon on the 19th of January and they will be looking to continue their impressive start in the competition.
Gambia on the other hand will be hoping for a better result when they face off with Guinea.
