Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman is the first player in 70 years to score 13 goals in his first season at Italian Serie A club, Atalanta.
Ademola Lookman achieved this feat after he scored his 13th goal of the season in Atalanta’s 3-1 win over Cremonese on Saturday. The Nigeria international scored the goal in the last minutes of the game.
Before he scored the third goal for Atalanta against Cremonese, Lookman played seven straight games without scoring for his Italian team and took the poor form to the international break in March in which he couldn’t score for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in two AFCON qualifiers.
Due to his drop in form, he played the Serie A game from the bench. The 25-year-old Nigerian forward had the opportunity to join the action in the 46th minute. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini brought him in to replace Luis Muriel.
According to stats platform Opta, Ademola Lookman’s 13th goal in 27 league games has made him the first Atalanta player to score such an amount of league goals in his first season after Poul Rasmussen in the 1952/1953 season.
With Saturday’s goal against Cremonese, Ademola Lookman became the rookie to have scored the most in this league”, the stats platform said.
The Nigerian striker has reached 13 goals, detaching Kvaratskhelia of Napoli, and moving to third place overall in the scorer’s chart.
The last Atalanta player to score at least 13 goals at this point of the season on his debut in Serie A was Poul Rasmussen in 1952/1953.”
So far this season, Lookman, who has scored a total of 15 goals in 29 games in all competitions, has helped Atalanta garner 48 points in 28 games. The club is currently occupying the 6th spot with 48 points, 2 points away from 4th placed Inter Milan.
