Oyo Task Force Apprehends 16 Suspected Black Market Diesel Traders, Pledges Prosecution.
The Oyo State Task Force on Petroleum Products has arrested 16 individuals suspected of engaging in black market diesel trading across various parts of the state. The operation, conducted on Thursday, targeted illegal activities that undermine the regulated fuel supply chain, with the task force vowing to prosecute those involved to deter future violations.
Officials from the task force stated that the suspects were apprehended following intelligence reports pinpointing their involvement in the illicit sale of diesel. The arrests took place in multiple locations within Ibadan, the state capital, where operatives seized significant quantities of diesel stored in jerry cans and makeshift containers. The task force described the operation as part of a broader effort to curb illegal fuel trading, which contributes to economic losses and safety hazards.
The Chairman of the Oyo State Task Force on Petroleum Products, in a statement, condemned the activities of black market operators, noting that such practices disrupt fair pricing and availability of petroleum products for residents. “We are committed to ensuring compliance with regulations. These arrests send a clear message that illegal trading will not be tolerated,” he said, adding that the suspects would face legal consequences following thorough investigations.
The operation has been praised by local residents and business owners, who have long complained about the inflated prices and risks associated with black market fuel sales. The task force’s actions align with the state government’s ongoing campaign to maintain order in the petroleum sector and protect consumers from exploitation.
Authorities have urged the public to report suspicious activities related to fuel trading, emphasising that collaboration with citizens is key to sustaining a regulated and safe market. The suspects are currently in custody, awaiting further legal proceedings as investigations continue.
