NCC Successfully Shuts Down Piracy Website MovieBox.ng.

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), in a significant move to combat online piracy, has successfully secured the suspension of MovieBox.ng, a notorious website known for streaming pirated films, music, and live sports. The operation, conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), marks a pivotal step in the NCC’s ongoing campaign to protect intellectual property in Nigeria’s creative industries. The suspension took effect on 20 July 2025, following a concerted effort to disrupt the site’s illicit activities.

Dr John Asein, Director-General of the NCC, announced the development, highlighting the sophisticated tactics employed by MovieBox.ng to evade detection. “The website’s operations suggested a coordinated attempt to sustain piracy through the use of multiple mirror domains and a history aligned with known piracy networks,” he stated. The NCC is actively working to deactivate other associated mirror sites to prevent the platform from resurfacing under alternative domains.

The shutdown has been widely praised by rights holders in the film, music, and broadcast sectors, who view it as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to tackling online piracy. The NCC’s action aligns with its “Stand Together Against Online Piracy (STOP)” campaign, launched earlier this year, which calls for collaboration among government agencies, internet service providers (ISPs), and industry stakeholders to safeguard creative content.

Dr Asein issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to avoid illegal streaming platforms. “These sites not only violate copyright laws but also expose users to significant risks, including malware, identity theft, and financial scams,” he cautioned. The NCC has also called on ISPs and other intermediaries to act responsibly by promptly responding to takedown notices, as mandated by the Copyright Act 2022.

This development underscores the NCC’s broader mission to foster a robust copyright system that supports Nigeria’s creative economy. As the nation continues its digital transformation, the Commission remains committed to addressing the challenges posed by online piracy, ensuring a safe and sustainable environment for creators and consumers alike.
