Nigerian Passport Climbs To 88th In Global Rankings, Highest In 5 Years.
The Nigerian passport has achieved its highest ranking in five years, soaring to 88th place out of 199 countries in the latest Henley Passport Index, released on 18 July 2025. This significant leap from its 97th position in 2023 reflects Nigeria’s growing influence in global diplomacy and improved travel freedom for its citizens.
According to the Henley Passport Index, which ranks passports based on the number of destinations accessible without a prior visa, the Nigerian passport now grants visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 45 countries. This figure remains unchanged from last year, but the improved ranking highlights Nigeria’s strides in strengthening bilateral agreements and modernising visa processes. The index, compiled using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), underscores Nigeria’s efforts to enhance its global image, as noted by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar during a recent press briefing in Abuja.

In Africa, Nigeria’s passport now outranks all but six countries—Seychelles, Mauritius, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Lesotho—positioning it as the seventh most powerful passport on the continent. This marks a notable improvement from 2024, when it held the sixth-lowest rank in Africa. Globally, Singapore retains the top spot with access to 193 destinations, while Afghanistan remains at the bottom with just 25.
The rise to 88th place, where Nigeria shares the ranking with Ethiopia and Myanmar, is a testament to the country’s ongoing diplomatic efforts. Over the past decade, the Nigerian passport has gained access to 11 additional destinations since 2006, when it was ranked 62nd. Despite this progress, challenges remain, with Nigerians still facing visa requirements for over 181 destinations.
Nigerian travellers have welcomed the news, as the improved ranking promises greater ease for business, leisure, and educational pursuits abroad. The strengthened passport is expected to foster stronger international ties, boost tourism, and attract investment, further elevating Nigeria’s standing on the global stage.
The Henley Passport Index, a globally recognised benchmark since 2005, continues to provide a comprehensive analysis of passport strength, offering insights into the evolving landscape of global mobility. For Nigerians, this milestone signals a brighter future for international travel and connectivity.
