Controversy Surrounds Death Of Former Akwa Ibom Police Officer

Controversy Surrounds Death Of Former Akwa Ibom Police Officer.

The death of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ekene Nwosu, formerly the Officer in Charge of the Anti-Robbery Squad at the Akwa Ibom State Police Command Headquarters, has sparked widespread reactions, with many residents reportedly celebrating the news, according to a statement by a local commentator.

The commentator, who claimed to have personally confronted Nwosu, described him as a “devil” and a “despicable human being” who subjected innocent people in Akwa Ibom to severe dehumanisation. It was alleged that Nwosu, regarded as a rogue officer, displayed a callous disregard for human rights, disrespected lawyers, and held the judiciary in contempt. Courts reportedly found him culpable in multiple cases of violating citizens’ rights, including those handled by a law firm in Uyo.

Despite numerous complaints against him, Nwosu was said to have wielded significant influence in the state, allegedly unchecked by successive Commissioners of Police. The commentator claimed that Nwosu served as a “mercenary” for oppressive and corrupt politicians, who used him to target individuals. It was further alleged that he celebrated the death of a former Commissioner of Police who had facilitated his transfer to Ekiti State, where he reportedly died on 31 May 2025.

The statement highlighted a broader concern about systemic issues within the police force, noting that Nwosu’s continued service despite his record reflected deeper institutional problems. While acknowledging that some disapproved of celebrating his death, the commentator asserted that those recalling Nwosu’s “evil deeds” were justified.

The commentator concluded by urging other officers to reflect on their legacy, stating, “Every mortal will taste death, but we should always consider what we will be remembered for.”

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding Nwosu’s death or the allegations made against him.
