Governor Fubara Urges Peace, Signals Resilience In First Speech Since Suspension

Governor Fubara Urges Peace, Signals Resilience In First Speech Since Suspension.

In his first public address since his suspension as Rivers State Governor on March 18, 2025, Siminalayi Fubara delivered a heartfelt and resolute speech at a Night of Tributes in Port Harcourt, calling for calm and unity amid the state’s ongoing political turmoil. The suspended governor, whose leadership has been at the center of a prolonged crisis, struck a tone of introspection and determination, urging supporters to align with his vision for peace and reconciliation.

Fubara, addressing a gathering that included dignitaries like Senator John Azuta Mbata, Senator Adawari Michael Pepple, and Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka, cautioned against actions that could escalate tensions in Rivers State. “Don’t do things because you want to do them; do the things I want,” Fubara said, emphasizing his role as the state’s leader in navigating the crisis. “I’m the one wearing the shoes; I know the solution to my problem. I know how to walk through my problem,” he added, signaling confidence in his approach to resolving the political impasse.

The governor’s remarks come against the backdrop of a bitter feud with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, which culminated in President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and Fubara’s six-month suspension. Despite the setback, Fubara expressed a lack of desperation to return to office, stating, “My spirit has left that place long ago,” referring to the Government House. He clarified, however, that his resolve to stand by those who have supported him remains unshaken.

Fubara’s speech was marked by a call for reflection on the path to peace. “I sometimes wonder if such people ask themselves whether the path they were taking was the true way to peace, stability, reconciliation,” he said, addressing supporters and critics alike. He urged restraint, warning that actions taken without his consent could jeopardize efforts to restore stability in the oil-rich state.

The event, which drew significant attention, was not without its complexities. Fubara cautioned against misinterpreting the solemn occasion, particularly in light of politically charged comments made by some speakers and clergy present. His words underscored a commitment to maintaining decorum and focus during a sensitive period for Rivers State.

Analysts view Fubara’s speech as a strategic move to reassert his leadership and rally support while navigating delicate reconciliation efforts. Recent reports indicate that Fubara has engaged in peace talks, including a visit to Wike’s residence in Port Harcourt accompanied by two All Progressives Congress governors, and a meeting with President Tinubu in London. These efforts, described by Rivers elders as a “sacrifice for peace,” suggest Fubara’s willingness to pursue dialogue to resolve the crisis.

The governor’s address also resonated with supporters, who have staged protests demanding his reinstatement since his suspension. Fubara acknowledged their loyalty, emphasizing the importance of standing by those who have made sacrifices for him. “We will emerge stronger,” he had previously assured residents, a sentiment echoed in his latest speech as he called for steadfastness and unity.

As Rivers State grapples with the fallout of the political crisis, Fubara’s speech has sparked mixed reactions. Supporters see it as a bold statement of resilience, while others interpret his reluctance to “go back” as a sign of shifting priorities. On X, reactions ranged from praise for his composure to speculation about his next moves, with one user noting, “Fubara’s calm is strategic—he’s playing the long game.”

For now, Fubara’s message is clear: peace and reconciliation are paramount, but on his terms. As the state awaits further developments, including anticipated talks involving Tinubu, Wike, and Rivers lawmakers, the suspended governor’s words offer a glimpse of hope and resilience for a region yearning for stability.
