NAFDAC Busts Illegal Operation Selling Fake Alcoholic Drinks In Lagos.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismantled a criminal operation involved in the sale of adulterated and expired alcoholic beverages in Lagos, Nigeria. The agency apprehended Mr. Madu Abuchi Simon, who was caught falsifying popular alcoholic brands, including Hennessy, William Lawson, Baileys, Martell, St. Remy, and Jameson.

Following a thorough search of the premises, NAFDAC officials uncovered a stockpile of incriminating evidence, including expired Amarula cream liquor, empty branded bottles and cartons, stickers, stoves, buckets, cotton wool, and a purple-coloured chemical suspected to be used for cleaning and reusing bottles. The suspect attempted to evade capture but was swiftly apprehended by authorities.

The operation yielded over 100 cartons of assorted adulterated alcoholic beverages, with an estimated market value exceeding ₦114 million. All confiscated items have been evacuated, and the outlet has been sealed pending further investigation.

NAFDAC has issued a stern warning to the public, urging consumers to purchase alcoholic products solely from reputable vendors and to scrutinise packaging for signs of tampering or expiry. The agency also encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to counterfeit goods to the nearest NAFDAC office.

A spokesperson for NAFDAC reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring consumer safety. “This operation underscores our resolve to rid Nigeria of harmful and illicit products. We will continue to pursue and prosecute those who endanger lives through such reckless activities,” they stated.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the operation and to identify any additional accomplices. NAFDAC’s decisive action serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in protecting consumers from dangerous counterfeit goods.
