University Of Ilesa Mourns Student Electrocuted While Charging Phone.
The University of Ilesa in Osun State is mourning the loss of one of its students, Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100-level undergraduate of the Department of Business Administration, who was tragically electrocuted on Friday evening, 18 April 2025.

According to an official statement released on Saturday by the University’s Registrar, Mr Funso Ojo, the unfortunate incident occurred while Gbolahan was playing a game on his mobile phone, which was connected to a charger in his room at a private hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction.
The electrocution was reportedly triggered by a lightning strike during a thunderstorm that passed through the area.
“The University community is deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of one of our promising students,” the statement read. “Gbolahan was electrocuted while using his phone during a thunderstorm, and the event has left us all in shock and grief.”
The institution confirmed that the Police were immediately notified following the incident. After the necessary protocols and clearance were completed, Gbolahan’s remains were transferred to the morgue at Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.
The University expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fellow students of the deceased, and urged members of the university community to remain cautious, especially during extreme weather conditions.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Gbolahan Ojolo and assure them of our support during this incredibly difficult time,” the Registrar added.
The incident serves as a solemn reminder of the potential dangers of using electrical devices during storms, and the University has advised all students to prioritise safety at all times.
