Nobody Can Remove Governor Fubara, Says Ex-Rivers LG Chairman Ihunwo

Nobody Can Remove Governor Fubara, Says Ex-Rivers LG Chairman Ihunwo.

A former Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Chijioke Ihunwo, has declared that despite the ongoing political crisis in the state, no one can remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office.

Speaking in Port Harcourt on Friday, Ihunwo alleged that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, was attempting to position the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, for the governorship. However, he insisted that such plans had failed and would not succeed.

Calls for Equity in Leadership

Ihunwo strongly criticised Amaewhule’s purported ambition to become governor through what he termed the “back door,” vowing that any such move would be firmly resisted.

“Nobody can remove Governor Fubara,” he stated. “I urge Rivers people to remain resolute in their support for the governor. Amaewhule cannot be acting governor; it won’t work. Let him focus on his lawmaking because we will not allow him to become governor.”

He further argued that it would be unfair for the Ikwerre people, who have held the governorship for 16 years, to prevent other ethnic groups from having their turn. He warned that any attempt to undermine the principle of equity could lead to instability in the state.

Defending Fubara’s Tenure

Ihunwo reaffirmed that the Riverine people would complete their tenure, stating that their support for Fubara was unwavering. “This is a fight to the finish,” he declared. “We will not engage in any war, but we will peacefully continue to enjoy victory.”

Despite the political turmoil, Ihunwo maintained confidence in Fubara’s leadership, emphasising that challenges in politics are normal.

Criticism of Wike and the State Assembly

The former council boss also tendered an apology to the Ijaw ethnic group over controversial remarks made by Wike during a live media chat in Abuja. He accused Wike of fuelling ethnic tensions in the state.

“What is happening is the selfish interest of one man trying to own Rivers State, but we will not allow one man to own our state,” Ihunwo asserted.

Additionally, he condemned lawmakers of the State House of Assembly for allegedly locking the entrance gate of the Assembly quarters, preventing Governor Fubara from presenting the 2025 Appropriation Bill.

Commendation for Tinubu and Rivers People

Ihunwo also praised President Bola Tinubu for his efforts in improving national security but advised him to be cautious of individuals within his administration whom he alleged were working against good governance.

He commended the people of Rivers State for standing by Fubara despite the ongoing challenges, assuring them that the crisis would soon be resolved.
