IPU Pledges Fair Hearing In Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Case.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has assured that it will consider both sides of the dispute involving suspended Nigerian lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan before taking any action. This follows Natasha’s appeal for justice during the Women in Parliament session in New York, where she sought intervention from global democratic institutions over her suspension from the Senate.

Dr Tulia Ackson, President of the IPU, acknowledged Natasha’s claims but emphasised the importance of hearing from all parties involved.

“There was a matter that arose during the first session this morning, raised by our colleague from Nigeria, Senator Natasha. Having heard her concerns, it is important for us to understand more about what she has said because we have only listened to her side,” Ackson stated.

She further explained that as a global parliamentary body, the IPU would follow due process by giving equal opportunity for both perspectives to be heard before determining the next steps.

Natasha’s suspension followed a heated confrontation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over a new seating arrangement, which she claimed was unfavourable to her. The situation escalated when she publicly accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and of using the seating issue as a form of retaliation.

After submitting a petition detailing her allegations, the Senate suspended Natasha for breaching its rules. However, she insists the action taken against her was unlawful and motivated by her decision to speak out.

In her address, Ackson reaffirmed the IPU’s commitment to fairness. “We will be taking the concerns raised, not only by her but also by the other side, as is the custom of the IPU. After listening to both perspectives, we will take the necessary steps.”

The IPU President concluded by stressing the importance of a balanced approach, ensuring that members of the organisation do not leave with a one-sided view of the situation.
