Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte Arrested On ICC Warrant

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte Arrested On ICC Warrant.

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested in Manila following an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) over alleged crimes against humanity linked to his controversial “war on drugs.”

Duterte, 79, was taken into custody at Manila airport upon his return from Hong Kong, where he had been campaigning for his senatorial slate ahead of the May 12 mid-term elections. He had previously stated that he was prepared to go to prison in response to speculation about his possible arrest.

His anti-drugs crackdown, which took place between 2016 and 2022 during his presidency, resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. Official figures state that over 6,000 suspects were killed by police or unknown assailants, but human rights groups suggest the number could be significantly higher. Critics have long accused Duterte of encouraging extrajudicial killings and abuses under the guise of law enforcement.

Reactions to the Arrest

The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) described the arrest as a “historic moment.” ICHRP Chairperson Peter Murphy stated, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but today, it has bent towards justice. Duterte’s arrest is the beginning of accountability for the mass killings that defined his brutal rule.”

However, Duterte’s former presidential spokesperson, Salvador Panelo, condemned the arrest as “unlawful,” arguing that the Philippines had withdrawn from the ICC. Despite this, the ICC has maintained its jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed before the country officially withdrew in 2019.

 Political Fallout

Duterte’s arrest comes amid ongoing tensions between his family and the current administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Initially, Marcos opposed ICC intervention but later shifted his stance as his political alliance with Duterte’s daughter, Vice-President Sara Duterte, began to fracture. It remains unclear whether Marcos will allow Duterte’s extradition to The Hague to face trial.

Footage aired on local television showed Duterte walking out of the airport using a cane. Authorities have confirmed that he is in “good health” and is receiving medical care while in custody.

The arrest marks a significant moment in the Philippines’ legal and political landscape, with global attention now focused on whether Duterte will stand trial for his controversial drug war policies.
