Bassey’s Header Secures Fulham’s First Home Win Of 2025.

Calvin Bassey’s first goal of the season helped Fulham to a well-earned victory over third-placed Nottingham Forest, marking their first Premier League win at Craven Cottage in 2025.

The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute through Emile Smith Rowe, who was expertly set up by the dazzling creativity of Adama Traoré. Rather than sprinting to the byline, Traoré cut inside onto his left foot and delivered a perfectly placed cross to the back post. Smith Rowe evaded the attention of Morato and Ola Aina to head home, giving Fulham an early advantage.

However, Forest found an equaliser eight minutes before half-time, courtesy of Chris Wood’s clinical centre-forward play. The New Zealand striker latched onto a long ball from Morgan Gibbs-White, cleverly turned back onto his right foot, and struck a low shot that deflected off Bassey before nestling into the net.

Fulham dominated proceedings after the break, with Raúl Jiménez and the influential Traoré both going close. The breakthrough finally came in the 62nd minute when Bassey rose highest at the back post to nod in a flicked-on corner from Jiménez, powering his header beyond Matz Sels to secure all three points.

The victory lifted Fulham to eighth in the table, five points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, while Forest remain just three points ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side, with a difficult run of fixtures ahead.

Fulham had struggled for wins at Craven Cottage in recent weeks, drawing four and losing one of their previous home matches. However, Marco Silva’s side displayed attacking flair and determination to claim a crucial victory.

The statistics highlighted their dominance—24 shots, 10 on target, and an xG of 2.24—compared to Forest’s limited attacking threat.

Central to Fulham’s success was Traoré, whose pace and power kept the Forest defence on the back foot. His exquisite assist for Smith Rowe’s opener was a moment of sheer quality. The 29-year-old Spaniard also showcased his work rate, racing back to halt Murillo’s counter-attacking run, demonstrating his commitment at both ends of the pitch.

As the game neared its conclusion, Fulham had to show resilience to see out the win, with Callum Hudson-Odoi going close for the visitors. However, Traoré remained vocal, urging his teammates to stay compact and secure a memorable league double over Forest, having won the reverse fixture at the City Ground in September.

For Nottingham Forest, Chris Wood was once again their standout performer, scoring his 18th Premier League goal of the season. Only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have more goals in the top flight this campaign.

The 33-year-old striker’s experience and physicality were on full display, as he expertly held up play and converted his only clear-cut chance of the match. However, his teammates struggled to match his level, resulting in a sluggish performance from a side that had previously won eight of their last 10 league games.

This defeat—Forest’s second in three matches—raises doubts about their ability to maintain their push for a top-four finish. With upcoming fixtures against Newcastle, Arsenal, and Manchester City, Nuno Espírito Santo’s side face a crucial test of their Champions League aspirations.
