Ruben Amorim, Sporting Lisbon’s talented manager, has accepted the role of head coach at Manchester United, set to join the club officially on 11 November. The 39-year-old Portuguese coach had hoped to finish the season with Sporting but was told by United it was “now or never,” leading him to make the mid-season move.
Amorim, who led Sporting to two league titles, including their first in nearly two decades, admitted the decision wasn’t easy but felt it was time to “take a step forward” in his career. “For three days, I wanted to stay until the end of the season, but then I was told it was not possible,” he shared, adding that he had only wanted Manchester United as his next challenge.
Until Amorim’s arrival, Ruud van Nistelrooy will act as interim manager for the club’s next three matches, guiding a team currently struggling in 14th place in the Premier League. With his staff set to join him at United, Amorim also clarified that he won’t seek Sporting players in the January transfer window, easing concerns about potential moves for key Sporting stars.
